How Much Does Solar Cost in SA? Full Price Breakdown (2026)

A full breakdown of solar system prices in South Africa for 2026, from small backup setups to large home systems, and what drives the total cost.

Solar pricing can feel confusing because no two homes need exactly the same system. But once you break a quote into its parts, it becomes much easier to understand what you are paying for and to compare offers fairly. Here is a 2026 guide to solar costs in South Africa.

What makes up a solar system price

A complete installed system is the sum of several parts:

  • Solar panels: the modules on your roof.
  • Inverter: the brain that converts and manages the power.
  • Battery: optional, but essential for load-shedding backup, and usually the most expensive single item.
  • Mounting, cabling and protection: the structure and electrical components that hold it together safely.
  • Installation and compliance: labour plus the Certificate of Compliance from a qualified person.

Typical price ranges in 2026

Prices vary by brand and home, but as a guide:

  • A small backup system (around 3 kW inverter with a 5 kWh battery and a few panels) often starts around R80,000 to R120,000.
  • A medium home system (5 to 8 kW inverter, 5 to 10 kWh battery, 5 to 6 kW of panels) commonly ranges from R120,000 to R200,000.
  • A large home system (8 kW or more with bigger battery storage) can run from R200,000 upwards.

A grid-tied system with no battery costs significantly less, because the battery is such a large share of the total.

Why batteries drive the cost

Installed lithium storage works out to roughly R7,000 to R12,000 per usable kWh, so the more backup you want, the higher the price. If budget is tight, you can start with a smaller battery and expand later, since most systems are designed to grow. See our guide to solar battery prices.

How to make your money go further

  • Be realistic about backup loads. Sizing for the essentials rather than the whole house keeps battery costs down.
  • Use as much power as possible during the day to maximise savings from a smaller system.
  • Compare at least three quotes on a like-for-like basis, including warranties.
