Solar Battery Storage Explained: Lithium vs Lead-Acid
Compare battery technologies for your solar system. Understand the pros, cons, lifespan, and costs of different battery options available in South Africa.
Battery storage is arguably the most important component of a modern solar installation in South Africa. While solar panels generate electricity during the day, batteries allow you to store that energy for use during load shedding, at night, or during peak tariff periods. Choosing the right battery technology is crucial for maximising your investment.
The two dominant battery technologies in the South African market are lithium-ion (specifically lithium iron phosphate, or LiFePO4) and lead-acid (including advanced variants like gel and AGM). Each has distinct advantages and trade-offs that make them suitable for different applications and budgets.
Lithium-ion batteries have become the preferred choice for most new installations. They offer a depth of discharge of 80 to 90 percent, meaning you can use most of the stored energy without damaging the battery. They typically last 5,000 to 6,000 charge cycles, translating to roughly 10 to 15 years of daily use. They are lighter, more compact, and require virtually no maintenance. Popular brands in South Africa include Pylontech, Freedom Won, and Hubble.
Lead-acid batteries, while older technology, remain relevant due to their lower upfront cost. A lead-acid battery bank might cost 40 to 50 percent less than an equivalent lithium setup. However, they can only be discharged to about 50 percent without significantly shortening their lifespan. They typically last 1,500 to 2,000 cycles and require regular maintenance, including topping up electrolyte levels.
When calculating total cost of ownership over 10 years, lithium batteries almost always come out ahead. Their longer lifespan means you avoid the cost and hassle of replacing lead-acid batteries every 3 to 5 years. For most South African homeowners investing in solar, lithium-ion represents the better long-term value.
